Letter to My Neighbors

Dear Friends

Some folks say you don’t choose your hometown, it chooses you.
Jones County chose me a long time ago. It raised me with hard lessons, strong backs, quiet values, and a deep love for people who look out for one another. And today, I’m writing to share with you why I’ve made the decision to run for Sheriff of this special place we call home.

Like many of you, I’ve been watching the world shift. Some of those changes have inspired me. Others have concerned me. And through it all, I’ve come to realize that strong, principled, and future-focused local leadership matters now more than ever.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the honor to serve under a transformative Chief, someone who didn’t just talk about leadership but lived it. I’ve seen firsthand what it looks like when a law enforcement agency puts people first, embraces accountability, and leads with both backbone and heart. That experience lit a fire in me. It showed me what’s possible when tradition meets vision.

And so I asked myself: What am I doing to help Jones County move forward?

The answer brought me right back here, to you. To my family. To our neighbors. To the church picnics, football stands, and quiet country roads that make this place home. And with a deep sense of responsibility, I made the decision to step forward and serve in a new way, as a candidate for Sheriff.

But I’m not running to wear a badge.

I’m running to renovate what’s broken, restructure what’s worn down, and help build a Sheriff’s Office that’s truly ready for tomorrow. I believe in law enforcement that is proactive, professional, and rooted in local values. I believe in earning trust — not assuming it. And I believe that protecting our communities means listening just as much as leading.

This campaign won’t be about pointing fingers or tearing anyone down.
It will be about building up our systems, our department, and our shared future.

So, from one neighbor to another, I ask you to walk this road with me. Help me lay a solid foundation for a future-proof Sheriff’s Office. One that our kids will grow up trusting and our elders can be proud of.

Jones County may be small in numbers, but it’s mighty in spirit. And together, I know we can protect what makes it great while preparing it for whatever comes next.

With respect and purpose,
Nathan Metts
Candidate for Sheriff – Jones County, NC
